Installing A New Bathroom Sink Drain

Replacing a bathroom sink drain is a relatively simple plumbing project that can be completed in a few hours. By following these step-by-step instructions, you can save yourself the cost of hiring a plumber.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Turn off the water supply to the sink. There should be two shut-off valves under the sink, one for the hot water and one for the cold water. Turn both valves clockwise to turn off the water.

2. Place a bucket under the sink to catch any water that may leak out.

3. Remove the old drain assembly. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the slip nut that is holding the drain assembly in place. Once the slip nut is loose, you can remove the drain assembly by pulling it straight up.

4. Clean the drain hole. Use a flashlight to inspect the drain hole and remove any debris or old plumber's putty. You can use a toothbrush or a small brush to clean the drain hole.

5. Apply plumber's putty to the new drain assembly. Roll out a small piece of plumber's putty and form it into a snake. Wrap the plumber's putty around the base of the new drain assembly.

6. Insert the new drain assembly into the drain hole. Align the drain assembly with the drain hole and press it into place. Tighten the slip nut by hand until it is snug. Use the adjustable wrench to further tighten the slip nut, but be careful not to overtighten it.

7. Turn on the water supply to the sink and check for leaks. Open the shut-off valves under the sink and turn on the water. Check for leaks around the drain assembly. If there are any leaks, tighten the slip nut further.

8. Install the drain stopper. Insert the drain stopper into the drain assembly and push it down until it is in place.
