How to Remove a Bathroom Faucet Cartridge

Replacing a faucet cartridge is a relatively simple task that can be completed in a matter of minutes. By following these steps, you can save yourself the cost of calling a plumber.

Tools and Materials Needed:

Phillips head screwdriver
Adjustable wrench
Replacement faucet cartridge

Step 1: Turn Off the Water Supply

Before you begin, turn off the water supply to the faucet. There should be two shut-off valves under the sink, one for the hot water and one for the cold water. Turn both valves clockwise to shut off the water.

Step 2: Remove the Handle

Depending on the type of faucet you have, the handle may be held in place by a screw or a cap. If there is a screw, remove it with a Phillips head screwdriver. If there is a cap, pry it off with a small flathead screwdriver.

Step 3: Remove the Escutcheon

The escutcheon is the decorative plate that covers the base of the faucet. It is usually held in place by a few screws. Remove the screws and lift off the escutcheon.

Step 4: Unscrew the Cartridge Retainer Nut

The cartridge retainer nut is located at the base of the faucet. Unscrew the nut with an adjustable wrench.

Step 5: Remove the Cartridge

Once the retainer nut is removed, you can pull out the cartridge. The cartridge may be stuck in place, so you may need to use a little force. Be careful not to damage the cartridge or the faucet.

Step 6: Install the New Cartridge

Align the new cartridge with the faucet and insert it into the hole. Tighten the cartridge retainer nut with an adjustable wrench.

Step 7: Reassemble the Faucet

Replace the escutcheon and handle. Turn on the water supply and check for leaks.
