Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Remove the old drain assembly

Use a basin wrench to loosen the nuts that hold the drain assembly in place. Remove the nuts and lift the drain assembly out of the sink.

Step 2: Clean the drain hole

Use a putty knife to remove any old putty from the drain hole. Clean the hole thoroughly with a damp cloth.

Step 3: Apply plumber's putty

Roll a small amount of plumber's putty into a rope and place it around the base of the drain assembly. Press the putty into place so that it fills the gap between the assembly and the sink.

Step 4: Insert the drain assembly

Insert the drain assembly into the drain hole and press down on it to seat it in the putty. Tighten the nuts that hold the assembly in place until they are snug.

Step 5: Install the tailpiece

Attach the tailpiece to the drain assembly by hand-tightening the slip joint nuts. Make sure that the nuts are tight, but do not overtighten them.

Step 6: Connect the P-trap

Connect the P-trap to the tailpiece by hand-tightening the slip joint nuts. Again, make sure that the nuts are tight, but do not overtighten them.

Step 7: Test the drain

Turn on the water and check for any leaks. If there are any leaks, tighten the slip joint nuts until the leaks stop.

Tips

Use a flashlight to see inside the drain hole when cleaning it.
If the drain assembly is not seated properly in the putty, it could leak.
Do not overtighten the slip joint nuts, as this could damage the P-trap.
