How to Install Offset Drain Pipes for Bathroom Sinks

Installing an offset drain pipe for a bathroom sink is a relatively simple plumbing task that can be completed in a few hours. However, it is important to follow the steps carefully to ensure a leak-free installation.

Materials Needed:

- Offset drain pipe - Slip joint nut - Slip joint washer - Plumber's putty - Pipe wrench - Adjustable wrench

Steps:

1. Remove the old drain pipe

If there is an existing drain pipe, use a pipe wrench to loosen the slip joint nut and remove the pipe. Clean the surface of the drain hole with a rag to remove any debris.

2. Apply plumber's putty

Roll out a rope of plumber's putty and press it around the base of the offset drain pipe. The putty will help to create a watertight seal.

3. Install the slip joint nut

Place the slip joint washer over the drain hole and then screw on the slip joint nut. Hand-tighten the nut until it is snug.

4. Connect the offset drain pipe

Insert the offset drain pipe into the slip joint nut and tighten the nut with a pipe wrench. Be careful not to overtighten the nut.

5. Adjust the position

Use an adjustable wrench to adjust the position of the offset drain pipe so that it aligns with the drain hole in the sink.

6. Tighten the slip joint nut

Once the offset drain pipe is in place, tighten the slip joint nut with a pipe wrench. Again, be careful not to overtighten the nut.

7. Install the P-trap

Connect the P-trap to the offset drain pipe and tighten the nuts. The P-trap will prevent sewer gases from entering the bathroom.

8. Test for leaks

Turn on the water and check for leaks around the offset drain pipe and P-trap. If there are any leaks, tighten the nuts until the leaks stop.
