How to Replace a Bathroom Sink Drain

A worn-out or clogged sink drain can cause water to pool in your sink, making it difficult to use. Replacing a sink drain is a relatively simple plumbing task that you can do yourself with the right tools and materials.

Tools and Materials You'll Need:

Adjustable wrench
Pliers
Bucket or bowl
New sink drain
Plumber's putty
Teflon tape (optional)

Step 1: Turn Off the Water Supply

Before you start working on the drain, turn off the water supply to the sink. This will prevent water from spraying out when you remove the old drain.

Step 2: Remove the Old Drain

Use an adjustable wrench or pliers to loosen the nuts holding the old drain in place. Once the nuts are loose, you can remove the drain by hand.

Step 3: Clean the Drain Hole

Use a sponge or cloth to clean the drain hole. Remove any old caulk or debris that may be blocking the hole.

Step 4: Apply Plumber's Putty

Roll a small amount of plumber's putty into a snake-like shape. Wrap the putty around the threads of the new drain.

Step 5: Install the New Drain

Insert the new drain into the drain hole. Hand-tighten the nuts until they are snug. Use the adjustable wrench or pliers to further tighten the nuts, but be careful not to overtighten them.

Step 6: Turn on the Water Supply

Turn on the water supply to the sink and check for leaks. If there are any leaks, tighten the nuts further.

Step 7: Add Optional Sealant

For added leak protection, you can apply a bead of Teflon tape around the threads of the drain before installing it.

Tips:

If you are replacing a pop-up drain, you will need to remove the linkage before removing the old drain.
If the old drain is stuck, you can use a penetrating oil to loosen it.
Be careful not to overtighten the nuts when installing the new drain.
