How To Install Bathroom Vanity Sink Drain

Installing a bathroom vanity sink drain is a relatively simple plumbing task that can be completed in a few hours. By following these steps, you can ensure that your new drain is installed correctly and will provide years of trouble-free service.

Materials Needed:

New sink drain
Plumber's putty
Adjustable wrench
Bucket
Rags

Step 1: Remove the Old Drain

To remove the old drain, first turn off the water supply to the sink. Then, place a bucket under the drain to catch any water that may leak out. Using an adjustable wrench, loosen the nut that holds the drain in place. Once the nut is loose, you can remove the old drain by hand.

Step 2: Apply Plumber's Putty

Before installing the new drain, you need to apply a layer of plumber's putty to the rim of the drain flange. Plumber's putty is a pliable material that will help to create a watertight seal between the drain and the sink.

To apply plumber's putty, simply roll out a small piece into a thin rope. Then, place the rope of putty around the rim of the drain flange, being sure to press it firmly into place.

Step 3: Install the New Drain

Once you have applied plumber's putty, you can install the new drain. To do this, simply place the drain flange over the hole in the sink and press it down firmly. Then, tighten the nut that holds the drain in place.

Step 4: Connect the Drain to the P-trap

The P-trap is the curved pipe that connects the sink drain to the main drain line. To connect the drain to the P-trap, simply insert the end of the drainpipe into the P-trap and tighten the slip nut. Be sure to hand-tighten the slip nut as much as possible, then use an adjustable wrench to tighten it further.

Step 5: Test the Drain

Once you have installed the new drain and connected it to the P-trap, you need to test the drain to make sure it is working properly. To do this, simply turn on the water supply to the sink and let the water run for a few minutes. Check for any leaks around the drain or the P-trap.

If you notice any leaks, tighten the slip nut on the P-trap or the nut that holds the drain in place. Once you are satisfied that the drain is working properly, you can use rags to wipe up any excess water.
