How to Change a Kohler Bathroom Faucet Valve

Replacing a Kohler bathroom faucet valve is a relatively simple plumbing task that can be completed in a few hours. By following these step-by-step instructions, you can save yourself the cost of hiring a plumber.

Materials Needed:

New Kohler faucet valve
Adjustable wrench
Plumber's putty
Screwdriver
Bucket

Instructions:

Turn off the water supply. There are usually two shut-off valves under the sink, one for hot water and one for cold water. Turn both valves clockwise to turn off the water.
Open the faucet. This will allow any remaining water to drain out of the faucet.
Remove the handle. Most Kohler faucet handles are held on by a set screw located on the underside of the handle. Use a screwdriver to remove the set screw, then pull the handle straight up to remove it.
Remove the cartridge. The cartridge is the part of the faucet that contains the valve. To remove the cartridge, use an adjustable wrench to loosen the packing nut that is located around the base of the cartridge. Once the packing nut is loose, you can pull the cartridge straight up to remove it.
Apply plumber's putty. Apply a thin layer of plumber's putty to the threads of the new cartridge. This will help to create a watertight seal.
Install the new cartridge. Insert the new cartridge into the faucet body and hand-tighten it. Then, use an adjustable wrench to tighten the packing nut until it is snug.
Reinstall the handle. Slide the handle onto the faucet body and tighten the set screw.
Turn on the water supply. Slowly turn on the shut-off valves under the sink to turn the water back on. Check for any leaks around the faucet.
