How to Fix a Single-Handle Bathroom Faucet

A leaking or malfunctioning bathroom faucet can be a frustrating and potentially costly problem. Gather Your Tools

Before you begin, gather the following tools:

Adjustable wrench
Phillips screwdriver
Flathead screwdriver
Allen wrench (if applicable)
Replacement cartridge (if needed)
Plumber's putty

Turn Off the Water Supply

Locate the water supply valves under the sink and turn them off. This will prevent water from flowing out of the faucet while you are working.

Remove the Handle

Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws that hold the handle in place. Once the screws are removed, pull the handle straight off the faucet.

Remove the Bonnet Nut

Using an adjustable wrench, loosen the bonnet nut that is located directly under the handle. The bonnet nut is typically made of plastic or metal and may have a small rubber washer around it.

Remove the Cartridge

Pull the cartridge straight out of the faucet body. The cartridge is a cylindrical-shaped component that contains the internal workings of the faucet. If the cartridge is damaged or worn, it will need to be replaced.

Inspect the Cartridge

Inspect the cartridge for any signs of damage or wear. If the cartridge is damaged, it will need to be replaced.

Replace the Cartridge (if needed)

If the cartridge is damaged, insert a new cartridge into the faucet body. Push the cartridge in until it is fully seated and hand-tighten the bonnet nut.

Reassemble the Faucet

Place the handle back on the faucet and secure it with the screws. Turn on the water supply valves and check for leaks. If there are no leaks, your faucet is now fixed.
