How to Repair a Leaky Faucet in the Bathroom

A leaky faucet is a common plumbing issue that can be easily fixed with the right tools and a little know-how. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to repair a leaky bathroom faucet:

Gather the Necessary Tools

  1. Adjustable wrench
  2. Philips screwdriver
  3. Flathead screwdriver
  4. Replacement faucet parts (if needed)
  5. Plumber's tape
  6. Cloth or towel

Turn Off the Water Supply

Before you start any repairs, turn off the water supply to the faucet. This is usually done by turning the shutoff valves located under the sink.

Remove the Faucet Handle

Most faucets have a screw hidden under the handle. Use a Philips or flathead screwdriver to remove the screw and pull off the handle.

Unscrew the Packing Nut

Using an adjustable wrench, loosen the packing nut located just below the handle. Do not remove it completely.

Tighten the Packing Nut

Using your fingers, tighten the packing nut clockwise until the leak stops. If the leak persists, wrap a few turns of plumber's tape around the threads of the packing nut before retightening it.

Replace the Washer or O-Ring

If tightening the packing nut does not stop the leak, you may need to replace the washer or O-ring. To do this, remove the packing nut completely and pull out the old washer or O-ring. Replace it with a new one and tighten the packing nut back into place.

Reassemble the Faucet

Slide the handle back onto the stem and tighten the screw. Turn on the water supply and check for leaks. If there are no leaks, your faucet repair is complete.

Tips for Preventing Future Leaks

  • Install a faucet aerator to reduce water flow and prevent water hammer.
  • Inspect the faucet regularly for signs of wear and tear.
  • Tighten loose screws or nuts as needed.
  • Never overtighten the packing nut, as this can damage the faucet.

If you cannot repair the leak on your own, do not hesitate to call a licensed plumber for assistance.
