Essential Aspects of Changing a Bathroom Sink Tap Washer
Leaking bathroom sink taps can waste water, increase your water bills, and cause damage to your bathroom and plumbing. One of the most common causes of a leaking tap is a worn-out washer. Replacing a tap washer is a relatively simple and inexpensive repair that can be done by most homeowners with basic tools.
To change a bathroom sink tap washer, you will need the following tools and materials:
- Adjustable wrench
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Flathead screwdriver
- Replacement tap washer
Once you have gathered your tools and materials, follow these steps to change the tap washer:
1.Turn off the water supply to the sink. There should be two shut-off valves under the sink, one for the hot water and one for the cold water. Turn both valves clockwise to turn off the water.
2.Open the tap to release any remaining water from the lines.
3.Use the adjustable wrench to loosen the packing nut on the base of the tap. The packing nut is the large nut that is located just above the base of the tap.
4.Use the Phillips head screwdriver to remove the handle screw. The handle screw is located on the top of the handle.
5.Pull the handle straight up to remove it from the tap.
6.Use the flathead screwdriver to pry the old washer out of the tap. The washer is a small, rubber or plastic disc that is located inside the tap.
7.Place the new washer into the tap.
8.Replace the handle and tighten the handle screw.
9.Tighten the packing nut.
10.Turn on the water supply and check for leaks.
If you follow these steps, you should be able to change a bathroom sink tap washer in a matter of minutes.
