How to Stop Bathroom Faucet Leaky
A leaky bathroom faucet is a common problem that can waste water and increase your water bill. It can also be annoying to listen to the constant drip, drip, drip. Fortunately, fixing a leaky faucet is usually a simple task that you can do yourself with a few basic tools.
There are two main types of bathroom faucets: compression faucets and cartridge faucets. Compression faucets use a washer to create a seal between the faucet body and the spout. Cartridge faucets use a cartridge to control the flow of water. The type of faucet you have will determine how you fix the leak.
Fixing a Compression Faucet Leak
To fix a compression faucet leak, you will need the following tools:
- Adjustable wrench
- Phillips screwdriver
- New washer
Step 1: Turn off the water supply to the faucet. There will be two shut-off valves under the sink, one for the hot water and one for the cold water. Turn both valves clockwise to turn off the water.
Step 2: Remove the handle. Most faucet handles are held in place by a screw. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the screw and then pull the handle off.
Step 3: Remove the packing nut. The packing nut is located just below the handle. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the packing nut and then remove it by hand.
Step 4: Replace the washer. The washer is located inside the packing nut. Remove the old washer and replace it with a new one.
Step 5: Reassemble the faucet. Replace the packing nut and tighten it with an adjustable wrench. Then, replace the handle and tighten the screw.
Step 6: Turn on the water supply and check for leaks. If there are no leaks, you have successfully fixed the faucet.
Fixing a Cartridge Faucet Leak
To fix a cartridge faucet leak, you will need the following tools:
- Adjustable wrench
- Cartridge puller
- New cartridge
Step 1: Turn off the water supply to the faucet. There will be two shut-off valves under the sink, one for the hot water and one for the cold water. Turn both valves clockwise to turn off the water.
Step 2: Remove the handle. Most cartridge faucet handles are held in place by a cap. Use a screwdriver to pry off the cap and then pull the handle off.
Step 3: Remove the cartridge. Use a cartridge puller to remove the cartridge from the faucet body. Be careful not to damage the cartridge or the faucet body.
Step 4: Replace the cartridge. Insert the new cartridge into the faucet body. Be sure to align the cartridge correctly. Then, use a cartridge puller to tighten the cartridge in place.
Step 5: Reassemble the faucet. Replace the handle and tighten the cap. Then, turn on the water supply and check for leaks. If there are no leaks, you have successfully fixed the faucet.
By following these steps, you can easily fix a leaky bathroom faucet. This will save you money on your water bill and help you avoid the annoyance of a constantly dripping faucet.
