How to Do a Tile Backsplash in Bathroom

A tile backsplash is a great way to add style and protection to your bathroom. It's a relatively easy project that can be completed in a weekend, and it can make a big difference in the overall look of your bathroom.

Materials You'll Need

  • Tiles
  • Thinset mortar
  • Grout
  • Notched trowel
  • Grout float
  • Wet saw or tile cutter
  • Level
  • Spacers
  • Caulk gun
  • Caulk

Instructions

1. Prepare the Surface

Start by cleaning the wall surface where you'll be installing the tile. Remove any dirt, dust, or grease. If the wall is uneven, you may need to level it with a self-leveling compound.

2. Install the Backer Board

If you're installing tile on drywall, you'll need to install a backer board first. This will provide a stable substrate for the tile.

3. Spread the Thinset Mortar

Use a notched trowel to spread a thin layer of thinset mortar onto the back of each tile. Be sure to spread the mortar evenly and leave no gaps.

4. Install the Tiles

Press the tiles into the thinset mortar, starting from the bottom and working your way up. Use spacers to ensure that the tiles are evenly spaced.

5. Let the Tiles Set

Allow the tiles to set for at least 24 hours before grouting.

6. Grout the Tiles

Use a grout float to apply grout to the spaces between the tiles. Press the grout into the spaces and then wipe away any excess.

7. Let the Grout Cure

Allow the grout to cure for at least 24 hours before caulking. 8. Caulk the Edges

Use a caulk gun to apply caulk around the edges of the tile backsplash. This will help to seal the tiles and prevent water from getting behind them.

9. Clean the Tile

Wipe down the tile backsplash with a damp cloth to remove any dust or debris.

Tips

  • Use a wet saw or tile cutter to cut the tiles to size.
  • Use a level to make sure that the tiles are straight.
  • Use spacers to ensure that the tiles are evenly spaced.
  • Allow the tiles to set for at least 24 hours before grouting.
  • Let the grout cure for at least 24 hours before caulking.
