How To Change Bathroom Drain Cover

Bathroom drains can become clogged over time, and a build-up of hair, soap, and other debris can cause water to drain slowly or not at all. The drain cover is often the first point of contact, and it can trap hair and other objects that can lead to a clog. Fortunately, cleaning or replacing the drain cover is a relatively simple task that can be completed in a few minutes with a few basic tools.

Tools and Materials

  • Pliers
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Screwdriver (optional)
  • New drain cover (if necessary)
  • Rags or towels

Step 1: Remove the Old Drain Cover

Start by using pliers to gently squeeze the tabs on the drain cover and pull it straight up. If the cover is stuck, you may need to use an adjustable wrench to loosen it. Be careful not to damage the drain or the surrounding area.

Step 2: Clean the Drain

Once the drain cover is removed, use a rag or towel to clean the drain opening. Remove any visible hair or debris, and if the drain is clogged, you may need to use a drain snake or other tool to clear the blockage.

Step 3: Install the New Drain Cover

If you are replacing the drain cover, simply align the new cover with the drain opening and press it into place. Make sure that the tabs are fully engaged and that the cover is secure.

Step 4: Tighten the Drain Cover

If the drain cover is loose, you may need to tighten it using a screwdriver. Insert the screwdriver into the screw on the side of the drain cover and turn it clockwise until the cover is snug. Be careful not to overtighten the screw.

Step 5: Test the Drain

Once the drain cover is installed, run water into the drain to test it. The water should drain quickly and smoothly. If the drain is still clogged, you may need to repeat steps 2 and 3.

Tips

  • Clean the drain cover regularly to prevent clogs.
  • If the drain cover is damaged, replace it immediately.
  • Do not use harsh chemicals to clean the drain cover, as this could damage it.
  • If you are not comfortable changing the drain cover yourself, call a plumber for assistance.
