How to Make a Bathroom Sink Stop Smelling
A smelly bathroom sink can be a major nuisance. Not only is it unpleasant to use, but it can also be a sign of a more serious problem. If your bathroom sink is starting to smell, there are a few things you can do to try to fix the problem.
1. Clean the Drain
The most common cause of a smelly bathroom sink is a clogged drain. Hair, soap scum, and other debris can build up in the drain over time, creating a breeding ground for bacteria. To clean the drain, you can use a commercial drain cleaner or a natural solution like baking soda and vinegar. If you're using a commercial drain cleaner, be sure to follow the instructions on the bottle carefully. If you're using a natural solution, mix 1/2 cup of baking soda with 1/2 cup of vinegar and pour it down the drain. Let it sit for 15 minutes, then flush the drain with hot water.
2. Check the P-Trap
The P-trap is a U-shaped pipe that is located under the sink. It helps to prevent sewer gases from escaping into the bathroom. If the P-trap is clogged, it can cause the sink to smell. To clean the P-trap, you'll need to remove it from the sink. Once you've removed the P-trap, clean it out with a brush and some hot water. Be sure to replace the P-trap correctly when you're finished.
3. Inspect the Vent Pipe
The vent pipe is a pipe that runs from the sink to the roof. It helps to ventilate the sink and prevent sewer gases from backing up into the bathroom. If the vent pipe is clogged, it can cause the sink to smell. To inspect the vent pipe, you'll need to go to the roof. Once you're on the roof, look for the vent pipe. It will be a white or gray pipe that is about 3 inches in diameter. If the vent pipe is clogged, you'll need to clear it out. You can do this by using a wire brush or a wet/dry vacuum cleaner.
4. Replace the Sink Stopper
The sink stopper is a small rubber or plastic cap that fits over the drain hole. It helps to keep water in the sink and prevent sewer gases from escaping. If the sink stopper is old or damaged, it can start to smell. To replace the sink stopper, simply pull it out of the drain hole and insert a new one.
5. Call a Plumber
If you've tried all of the above solutions and your bathroom sink still smells, you may need to call a plumber. A plumber will be able to inspect the sink and determine the cause of the smell. They will also be able to fix the problem and prevent it from happening again.
