How to Replace a Washer in a Moen Bathroom Faucet

A dripping faucet is not only annoying, but it can also waste a lot of water. If your Moen bathroom faucet is dripping, it's likely that the washer needs to be replaced. Replacing a washer is a relatively simple task that can be completed in a few minutes. Here are the steps on how to replace a washer in a Moen bathroom faucet:

Materials You'll Need

  • Replacement washer (Moen part number 1225)
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Pliers (optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Turn off the water supply to the faucet. There should be two shut-off valves under the sink, one for hot water and one for cold water. Turn both valves clockwise to turn off the water.

2. Open the faucet to release any remaining water.

3. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the packing nut. The packing nut is located at the base of the faucet handle. Turn the nut counterclockwise to loosen it.

4. Remove the handle. Once the packing nut is loose, you can remove the handle by pulling it straight up.

5. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the cartridge. The cartridge is located behind the handle. Turn the screw counterclockwise to remove it.

6. Remove the old washer from the cartridge. The washer is located at the bottom of the cartridge. Use your fingers or a pair of pliers to remove it.

7. Insert the new washer into the cartridge. Make sure that the washer is properly seated in the groove.

8. Reinstall the cartridge. Align the cartridge with the opening in the faucet body and insert it. Turn the screw clockwise to tighten it.

9. Reinstall the handle. Push the handle onto the faucet body and tighten the packing nut.

10. Turn on the water supply and check for leaks. If there are any leaks, you may need to tighten the packing nut further.

Tips

  • If you are not comfortable replacing the washer yourself, you can call a plumber.
  • Moen faucets come with a lifetime warranty, so if you have any problems with your faucet, you can contact Moen for assistance.
  • Replacing a washer is a simple task that can save you money in the long run.
