How to Change a Bathroom Recessed Light Fixture

Recessed lights are a great way to add both style and function to your bathroom. They are also relatively easy to change, making them a good project for DIYers. Here are the steps on how to change a bathroom recessed light fixture:

Step 1: Turn Off the Power

The first step is to turn off the power to the light fixture. You can do this by flipping the breaker that controls the light in your bathroom's electrical panel. Once the power is off, you can proceed to the next step.

Step 2: Remove the Old Light Fixture

Once the power is off, you can remove the old light fixture. To do this, insert a flathead screwdriver or trim tool into the slot that is located on the regressed trim. Push against the springs and pull the trim down. In case the trim does not pull down, you might need to unclip the springs from the side. After removing the trim, disconnect the wires from the old light fixture. You can do this by twisting the wire nuts counterclockwise and pulling the wires apart. Once the wires are disconnected, you can remove the old light fixture from the ceiling.

Step 3: Prepare the New Light Fixture

Once the old light fixture is removed, you can prepare the new light fixture. To do this, connect the wires from the new light fixture to the wires from the ceiling. Twist the wire nuts clockwise until they are tight. Once the wires are connected, you can insert the new light fixture into the ceiling. Make sure that the springs snap into place and the trim is secured.

Step 4: Turn On the Power

Once the new light fixture is in place, you can turn on the power. To do this, flip the breaker that controls the light in your bathroom's electrical panel. Once the power is on, you can test the new light fixture to make sure that it is working properly.

Additional Tips

Here are some additional tips for changing a bathroom recessed light fixture:

  • Make sure that the new light fixture is the same size as the old light fixture. If the new light fixture is too large, it will not fit in the ceiling.
  • If you are not comfortable working with electricity, it is best to hire an electrician to change the light fixture for you.
  • Be sure to wear safety glasses when changing a light fixture.
