How to Repair Plasterboard Walls in Your Bathroom

Plasterboard walls, commonly known as drywall, are a popular choice for bathrooms due to their low cost and ease of installation. However, they can be susceptible to damage, especially in humid environments like bathrooms. If your bathroom's plasterboard walls have become damaged, don't worry; you can repair them yourself with the right materials and techniques.

Assessing the Damage

Before you start repairing, it's crucial to assess the extent of the damage. Determine the affected area and whether it's a small hole, a crack, or a more significant area of damage. This will help you determine the best repair method and materials.

Gathering the Necessary Materials

Once you've assessed the damage, gather the following materials:

Plasterboard patch kit (self-adhesive mesh patches are recommended)
Joint compound (also known as drywall mud)
Joint tape
Putty knife
Sandpaper (120- and 220-grit)
Caulk gun with bathroom-grade caulk

Repairing the Wall

Here are the steps to repair your bathroom's plasterboard wall:

1. Prepare the Surface

Remove any loose paint or debris from the damaged area. If the hole is larger than a few inches, you may need to cut a square or rectangular hole using a drywall saw.

2. Apply the Patch

If you're repairing a hole, place a self-adhesive mesh patch over it, ensuring it extends slightly beyond the edges of the hole. Press firmly to adhere it to the wall.

3. Apply Joint Compound

Spread a thin layer of joint compound over the patch using a putty knife. Smooth it out to create a flat surface.

4. Apply Joint Tape (if necessary)

If you're repairing a crack, apply joint tape over it and press it into the joint compound.

5. Apply Additional Joint Compound

Apply a second layer of joint compound, feathering the edges to blend it with the surrounding wall.

6. Sand and Smooth

Once the joint compound has dried, sand it smooth using 120-grit sandpaper. Apply a light skim coat of joint compound if necessary and sand again with 220-grit sandpaper.
