Installing a Bathroom Exhaust Fan on a Flat Roof

Choosing the Right Fan

Roof Penetration

Create a hole in the roof using a hole saw or drill bit. Ensure the hole is the correct size for your chosen fan housing and that it is located in a well-ventilated area. Carefully cut away any roofing material around the hole.

Installing the Base Plate

Position the fan's base plate over the hole in the roof. Fasten the base plate securely to the roof deck using screws or bolts. Use caulk or sealant to seal any gaps between the base plate and the roof surface.

Wiring the Fan

Connect the fan's electrical wires to the appropriate power supply. Ensure the wires are secured and protected in a junction box or conduit. Refer to local electrical codes for proper wiring practices.

Installing the Housing

Place the fan housing over the base plate and secure it with screws. Seal the joint between the housing and the base plate with caulk or sealant. Ensure the fan is level and properly aligned.

Connecting the Ductwork

Run flexible ductwork from the fan housing to a vent on the roof or soffit. Secure the ductwork using clamps or tape. Ensure the ductwork is properly sloped to prevent condensation buildup.

Installing the Vent Cap

Place a vent cap over the end of the ductwork on the roof or soffit. Secure the vent cap in place using screws or bolts. The vent cap should provide adequate ventilation while preventing rain or debris from entering the ductwork.

Finishing Touches

Turn on the fan to ensure it is functioning properly. Check for any air leaks or unusual noises. If necessary, adjust the fan's speed or make any necessary repairs. Cover the electrical connections with wire nuts and secure them inside a junction box or the fan's housing.
