Fitting A Bathroom Sink Drain
Replacing a bathroom sink drain is a relatively simple plumbing task that can be completed in a few hours. By following these step-by-step instructions, you can save yourself the cost of hiring a plumber.
Tools and Materials Needed
- Adjustable wrench
- Plumber's putty
- New drain assembly
- Bucket
- Rags
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Turn Off the Water Supply
Locate the water supply valves under the sink and turn them off. Open the faucet to release any remaining water in the lines.
2. Remove the Old Drain
Place a bucket under the sink to catch any water. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the nuts that hold the old drain assembly in place. Carefully remove the drain assembly from the sink.
3. Clean the Sink Drain Hole
Use a rag to clean the drain hole in the sink. Remove any old plumber's putty or debris.
4. Apply Plumber's Putty
Roll a small amount of plumber's putty into a rope and place it around the base of the new drain assembly. The putty will create a watertight seal when the drain is installed.
5. Install the New Drain
Carefully insert the new drain assembly into the sink drain hole. Hand-tighten the nuts that hold the drain in place. Use the adjustable wrench to further tighten the nuts, but do not overtighten.
6. Connect the Drain Tailpiece
The drain tailpiece is the curved pipe that connects the drain assembly to the P-trap. Attach the tailpiece to the drain assembly and hand-tighten the nuts. Use the adjustable wrench to further tighten the nuts, but again, do not overtighten.
7. Turn On the Water Supply
Turn on the water supply valves under the sink. Check for any leaks around the drain assembly or tailpiece. If you find any leaks, tighten the nuts further.
Tips
- If you encounter any difficulty removing the old drain assembly, you may need to use a hacksaw to cut the nuts.
- Do not use excessive force when tightening the nuts. Overtightening can damage the drain assembly or sink.
- If you are not comfortable performing this task yourself, it is best to call a licensed plumber.
