How to DIY: Replacing the Drain Pipe Under Your Bathroom Sink

A leaking bathroom sink can be a major inconvenience and a potential source of water damage. If the leak is coming from the drain pipe, you can replace it yourself with a few simple tools and materials.

Here are the steps on how to do it:

1. Gather Your Tools and Materials

You will need the following tools and materials:
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Pliers
  • Bucket
  • Putty knife
  • New drain pipe
  • Plumber's putty

2. Turn Off the Water Supply

Before you begin, turn off the water supply to the sink. There should be a shut-off valve under the sink. Turn the valve clockwise to close it.

3. Disconnect the Old Drain Pipe

Use the adjustable wrench to loosen the nuts that hold the old drain pipe in place. Once the nuts are loose, you can disconnect the pipe from the sink and the trap.

4. Clean the Sink and Trap

Use the putty knife to remove any old plumber's putty from the sink and the trap. You can also use a damp cloth to clean the surfaces.

5. Apply Plumber's Putty to the New Drain Pipe

Roll out a small piece of plumber's putty into a rope. Apply the putty to the end of the new drain pipe that will be inserted into the sink.

6. Insert the New Drain Pipe

Insert the new drain pipe into the sink. Make sure that the putty rope is evenly distributed around the pipe.

7. Tighten the Nuts

Use the adjustable wrench to tighten the nuts that hold the drain pipe in place. Be careful not to overtighten the nuts.

8. Turn On the Water Supply

Turn on the water supply to the sink and check for leaks. If there are any leaks, tighten the nuts a little more.

9. Clean Up

Once the leak is fixed, clean up any remaining plumber's putty or water.

Tips

  • If you are not comfortable working with plumbing, you can hire a plumber to replace the drain pipe for you.
  • Be sure to use a drain pipe that is the same size as the old drain pipe.
  • If the leak is coming from the trap, you can replace the trap instead of the entire drain pipe.
