How to Change a Faucet in a Bathroom Sink

Replacing a bathroom sink faucet is a relatively simple plumbing project that can be completed in an afternoon. With the right tools and a little know-how, you can save yourself the cost of hiring a plumber and upgrade your bathroom's style in the process.

Tools and Materials You'll Need:

New faucet

Adjustable wrench

Basin wrench

Plumber's putty

Teflon tape

Flashlight (optional)

Steps:

1. Turn off the Water Supply:

Locate the shutoff valves under the sink and turn them off to stop the water supply. Open the faucet to release any remaining water in the lines.

2. Disconnect the Supply Lines:

Use a basin wrench to loosen and disconnect the hot and cold water supply lines from the faucet's base. Be careful not to overtighten or damage the lines.

3. Remove the Old Faucet:

Use an adjustable wrench to loosen and remove the nuts that hold the faucet to the sink. Lift the old faucet straight up and out of the sink.

4. Clean the Sink Basin:

Wipe down the sink basin where the new faucet will be installed to remove any debris or old sealant.

5. Apply Plumber's Putty:

Roll a small piece of plumber's putty into a ball and place it around the base of the new faucet. Use your finger to smooth it out and create a seal.

6. Install the New Faucet:

Place the new faucet into the hole in the sink and tighten the nuts under the sink using the adjustable wrench. Be sure to tighten them securely but not excessively.

7. Connect the Supply Lines:

Wrap several layers of Teflon tape around the threads of the supply lines and connect them to the corresponding hot and cold water valves on the faucet base. Tighten them with the basin wrench.

8. Turn on the Water Supply:

Slowly turn on the shutoff valves under the sink to restore water flow. Check for leaks around the faucet base and supply lines. If necessary, tighten the connections further.

9. Test the Faucet:

Turn on the faucet and let it run for a few minutes to test for proper operation and check for any leaks. Adjust the handles as needed to achieve the desired water temperature and flow.

10. Finish and Clean Up:

Wipe down the sink and faucet to remove any excess water or debris. If you used a flashlight, retrieve it from the sink.
