Drain Installation: Bathroom Sink to Floor

Installing a drainpipe to connect your bathroom sink to the floor drain is an essential plumbing task that requires careful planning and execution. A properly installed drain ensures smooth water drainage, prevents leaks and water damage, and contributes to the overall hygiene of your bathroom.

Materials You'll Need:

  • PVC drainpipe (1-1/2 inch diameter)
  • PVC pipe cutter
  • PVC cement
  • P-trap
  • Sink drain flange
  • Washers
  • Putty knife
  • Teflon tape

Steps for Installation:

  1. Measure and Cut the Pipe: Measure the distance from the sink drain to the floor drain. Cut the PVC pipe to that length using the pipe cutter.
  2. Create a P-trap: Attach the P-trap to the bottom of the sink drain flange. The P-trap forms a U-shape that traps water, preventing sewer gases from entering the bathroom.
  3. Attach the Drainpipe to the P-trap: Cut a short piece of PVC pipe and connect it between the P-trap and the longer drainpipe. Use PVC cement to seal the joints.
  4. Secure the Flange to the Sink: Place a washer over the sink drain opening and install the sink drain flange. Seal the flange with plumbers putty and tighten the flange nut.
  5. Connect the Drainpipe to the Floor Drain: Place the drainpipe into the floor drain. If necessary, use a rubber adapter to ensure a snug fit.
  6. Test for Leaks: Turn on the water in the sink and check for any leaks at the joints. If there are any leaks, tighten the connections or reapply PVC cement.

Additional Tips:

  • Use a spirit level to ensure that the drainpipe is properly sloped (1/4 inch drop per foot) towards the floor drain.
  • Apply Teflon tape around the threads of the floor drain and sink flange to prevent water from seeping through.
  • Tighten all connections firmly, but avoid overtightening as it can damage the fittings.
  • If you encounter any difficulties, don't hesitate to seek the assistance of a professional plumber.

Benefits of a Properly Installed Drain:

  • Efficient water drainage
  • Prevents water backups and overflows
  • Reduces the risk of leaks and water damage
  • Improves bathroom hygiene
  • Enhances the overall functionality and longevity of your bathroom fixtures

By following these steps and incorporating the additional tips, you can successfully install a drainpipe from your bathroom sink to the floor drain, ensuring a well-functioning and aesthetically pleasing bathroom.
