Building Code Ontario Bathroom Ventilation: Essential Aspects

In addition to exhaust fans, bathroom ventilation also includes the use of supply air. Supply air is fresh air that is brought into the bathroom from outside. This air helps to dilute the moisture and pollutants in the bathroom and create a more comfortable environment. Supply air can be provided through passive means, such as open windows or vents, or through mechanical means, such as a dedicated supply fan.
Proper bathroom ventilation requires a balance between exhaust and supply air. Excessive exhaust can create negative pressure in the bathroom, which can draw air from other parts of the home and lead to energy loss. On the other hand, insufficient exhaust will not effectively remove moisture and humidity from the bathroom. The ideal balance will provide adequate ventilation while maintaining a comfortable indoor environment.
It is also important to consider the placement of the exhaust fan. The fan should be located near the source of moisture, such as the shower or bathtub. This will ensure that the most humid air is being removed from the bathroom. The fan should also be installed at a height of at least 6 feet (1.8 meters) above the floor to prevent it from being obstructed by objects or fixtures.
Regular maintenance of bathroom ventilation systems is essential to ensure optimal performance.
