Change a Drain Bathroom Sink: A Comprehensive Guide

A faulty bathroom sink drain can cause waterlogging, unpleasant odors, and even health hazards. Changing a drain yourself can save you the expense of hiring a plumber. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you tackle this task effectively.

Safety First: Always wear gloves and safety glasses when working with plumbing fixtures.

Materials You'll Need:

  • Adjustable wrench or pliers
  • Drain stopper or plug
  • Bucket or bowl
  • Replacement drain assembly

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Remove the Drain Stopper:

Most drains are equipped with a stopper held in place by a screw or a rubber stopper ring. Use pliers to remove the screw or pull out the rubber ring to release the stopper.

2. Disconnect the Tailpipe:

The tailpipe is the vertical pipe connected to the drain hole. Place a bucket under the pipe to catch any water. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the nut connecting the tailpipe to the drain assembly.

3. Remove the Old Drain Assembly:

Some drain assemblies simply unscrew from the sink drain hole. If yours is held in place by a locknut, use the wrench to loosen it. Remove the old drain assembly.

4. Install the New Drain Assembly:

Place a new rubber washer or seal on the base of the new drain assembly. Insert the assembly into the drain hole and tighten the locknut or screw it in place.

5. Reattach the Tailpipe:

Align the tailpipe with the drain assembly and tighten the nut securely. Use pliers to ensure a tight connection.

6. Install the Drain Stopper:

Reinstall the drain stopper or plug as per the manufacturer's instructions.

7. Test the Drain:

Run water into the sink to check for any leaks. Inspect the connections and tighten further if necessary.

Tips:

  • Use a flashlight to inspect the drain hole for any debris or obstructions.
  • Apply petroleum jelly to the drain threads to ease future removal.
  • If you encounter any significant corrosion or damage, consider calling a professional plumber.
