Fix a Bathroom Sink Faucet: A Comprehensive Guide

A leaky or malfunctioning bathroom sink faucet can be a major inconvenience. Fortunately, fixing a bathroom sink faucet is a relatively simple task that can be completed by most do-it-yourselfers. Here's a comprehensive guide on how to fix a bathroom sink faucet:

Tools and Materials:

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Plumber's putty
  • Faucet repair kit (if necessary)

Step 1: Turn off the water supply

Before you begin working on the faucet, it's important to turn off the water supply to the sink. This will prevent any water from leaking out while you're working.

Step 2: Remove the aerator (optional)

Some faucets have an aerator, which is a small device that helps to mix air with the water to create a more forceful stream. If your faucet has an aerator, you can remove it by unscrewing it counterclockwise with your fingers.

Step 3: Loosen the packing nut

The packing nut is located around the base of the faucet handle. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the packing nut by turning it counterclockwise.

Step 4: Remove the handle

Once the packing nut is loose, you can remove the handle by pulling it straight up. If the handle is stuck, you can try using a flathead screwdriver to gently pry it up.

Step 5: Replace the washer (if necessary)

If the faucet is leaking from the base of the handle, you may need to replace the washer. To do this, simply remove the old washer and replace it with a new one from the faucet repair kit.

Step 6: Reassemble the faucet

Reassemble the faucet by replacing the handle, packing nut, and aerator (if you removed it). Tighten all of the connections by hand, and then use the adjustable wrench to tighten them further.

Step 7: Turn on the water supply and check for leaks

Once the faucet is reassembled, turn on the water supply and check for leaks. If there are any leaks, tighten the connections further.
