Fix a Leaky Bathroom Faucet with a Single Handle
When you have a leaky faucet, it can be a real nuisance because it wastes water and can increase your utility bills. Fortunately, fixing a single-handle bathroom faucet is a relatively simple DIY project that you can complete in about an hour.
Tools and Materials you'll need:
- Adjustable wrench
- Phillips screwdriver
- Flathead screwdriver
- Replacement cartridge
- Plumber's putty
- Rags
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Turn off the water supply. There should be two shut-off valves beneath the sink, one for hot water and one for cold water. Turn both valves clockwise to turn off the water supply.
- Open the faucet. This will release any remaining water in the faucet and lines.
- Remove the aerator. The aerator is the small, screen-like attachment at the tip of the faucet. Use a wrench to unscrew it.
- Remove the handle. Most single-handle faucets have a small screw on the top of the handle. Use a screwdriver to remove the screw, then pull the handle straight up to remove it.
- Remove the cartridge. The cartridge is the part of the faucet that controls the flow of water. Use a wrench to loosen the nut that holds the cartridge in place, then pull the cartridge straight out.
- Inspect the cartridge. Look for any signs of damage or wear. If the cartridge is damaged, you will need to replace it.
- Install the new cartridge. If the cartridge is damaged, insert the new cartridge into the faucet body and tighten the nut to secure it.
- Reinstall the handle. Push the handle back onto the faucet body and tighten the screw.
- Reinstall the aerator. Screw the aerator back onto the faucet.
- Turn on the water supply. Open the shut-off valves beneath the sink to turn on the water supply.
- Check for leaks. Open the faucet and check for any leaks. If you see any leaks, tighten the packing nut or replace the O-rings.
Tips:
- If you are not comfortable working on plumbing, you can call a plumber to fix the leak.
- Be sure to turn off the water supply before you start working on the faucet.
- Use a flashlight to see inside the faucet if you have trouble removing the cartridge.
- If you have a hard time removing the handle, you can try using a penetrating oil to loosen it.
