How to Remove a Bathroom Sink Drain Stopper

If your bathroom sink's drain is clogged, you may need to remove the drain stopper to clear the blockage. Depending on the type of drain stopper you have, there are a few different ways to remove it.

Pop-Up Drain Stoppers

Pop-up drain stoppers are the most common type of drain stopper. To remove one, you will need to:

1.

Turn off the water supply to the sink

. This will prevent water from leaking out when you remove the stopper. 2.

Remove the small cap on top of the drain stopper

. This cap is usually held in place by a screw or a snap-on mechanism. 3.

Reach down into the drain and locate the stopper mechanism

. It is usually a small, plastic or metal piece that is attached to the drainpipe. 4.

Push up on the stopper mechanism while turning it counterclockwise

. This will release the stopper from the drainpipe and allow you to remove it.

Lift-and-Turn Drain Stoppers

Lift-and-turn drain stoppers are similar to pop-up drain stoppers, but they have a handle that you lift up to open and close the stopper. To remove a lift-and-turn drain stopper, you will need to:

1.

Turn off the water supply to the sink

. 2.

Lift up on the handle of the drain stopper

. This will open the stopper and allow you to access the drainpipe. 3.

Reach down into the drain and locate the stopper mechanism

. It is usually a small, plastic or metal piece that is attached to the drainpipe. 4.

Turn the stopper mechanism counterclockwise to release it from the drainpipe

. You may need to use a pair of pliers to get a good grip on the stopper mechanism. 5.

Lift the stopper mechanism out of the drainpipe

.

Screw-In Drain Stoppers

Screw-in drain stoppers are less common than pop-up and lift-and-turn stoppers. To remove a screw-in drain stopper, you will need to:

1.

Turn off the water supply to the sink

. 2.

Locate the screw that holds the stopper in place

. It is usually located on the underside of the stopper. 3.

Use a screwdriver to remove the screw

. 4.

Pull the stopper out of the drain

.

Pliers or Wrench Method

If you are unable to remove the drain stopper by hand, you can try using a pair of pliers or a wrench. To do this, you will need to:

1.

Turn off the water supply to the sink

. 2.

Wrap a cloth around the pliers or wrench to protect the finish of the drain stopper

. 3.

Grip the stopper tightly with the pliers or wrench

. 4.

Turn the stopper counterclockwise to loosen it

. 5.

Remove the stopper from the drain

.
