How to Attach a Sink to a Bathroom Vanity

Installing a sink to a bathroom vanity is a fairly straightforward task that can be completed in just a few hours. By following these step-by-step instructions, you can ensure a successful and professional-looking installation.

What You'll Need

  • Sink
  • Bathroom vanity
  • Sink drain assembly
  • Sink strainer
  • Faucet
  • Faucet mounting hardware
  • Plumber's putty
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Screwdriver

Step 1: Prepare the Vanity

Start by placing the vanity in its desired location. If necessary, assemble the vanity according to the manufacturer's instructions. Once assembled, check the countertop to ensure it is level. If it is not level, use shims to level it out.

Step 2: Install the Drain Assembly

Apply plumber's putty to the underside of the sink drain flange. Position the flange over the drain hole and secure it in place with the lock nut. Tighten the lock nut until it is snug, but do not overtighten.

Step 3: Install the Sink

Apply a thin layer of plumber's putty to the rim of the sink. Carefully lift the sink and align it with the drain opening in the countertop. Lower the sink into place and press down gently to seal it. Wipe away any excess putty.

Step 4: Install the Faucet

Remove the aerator from the faucet and set it aside. Apply plumber's putty to the base of the faucet and thread it into the designated holes in the countertop. Tighten the faucet by hand until it is snug. Using an adjustable wrench, tighten the faucet an additional 1/2 to 3/4 turn.

Step 5: Install the Handles

If your faucet has separate handles, align the handles with the hot and cold water lines. Insert the handles into the designated holes and tighten the set screws. Do not overtighten.

Step 6: Connect the Drain Line

Connect the sink drain assembly to the P-trap using the provided nuts and washers. Tighten the nuts by hand until they are snug. Connect the P-trap to the drain pipe using another nut and washer. Again, tighten the nut by hand until snug.

Step 7: Connect the Water Lines

Connect the hot and cold water lines to the faucet using the provided nuts and washers. Tighten the nuts by hand until they are snug. Turn on the water supply and check for leaks. If any leaks are present, tighten the nuts further.

Step 8: Install the Sink Strainer

Align the sink strainer with the drain hole in the sink and insert it into place. Turn the strainer clockwise to lock it into position.

Step 9: Test the Sink

Turn on the water supply and check for leaks around the sink, drain, and faucet. If any leaks are found, tighten the nuts or adjust the connections as necessary. Once the sink is free of leaks, you can enjoy your newly installed sink.
