1. Gather Your Tools and Materials

Before you begin, gather the following tools and materials:

New shut-off valve
Wrench
Adjustable wrench
Teflon tape or pipe dope
Basin wrench or pliers
Bucket or bowl
Flashlight (optional)

2. Turn Off the Water Supply

Locate the main water shut-off valve for your home and turn it off. This is usually located in the basement or garage. Once the water is turned off, open the faucet to release any remaining water in the pipes.

3. Access the Shut-Off Valve

If the shut-off valves are located under the sink, you may need to remove the cabinet doors or drawers to access them. Use a flashlight if necessary to see better.

4. Remove the Old Shut-Off Valve

Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the packing nut on the old shut-off valve. Once the packing nut is loose, you can remove the valve by hand or with a basin wrench or pliers.

5. Apply Teflon Tape or Pipe Dope

Wrap a few layers of Teflon tape or apply a thin layer of pipe dope to the threads of the new shut-off valve.

6. Install the New Shut-Off Valve

Hand-tighten the new shut-off valve onto the water supply pipe. Use the wrench to further tighten the valve, but avoid overtightening.

7. Reconnect the Water Supply

Turn the water back on at the main shut-off valve. Check for leaks around the new shut-off valve. If there are no leaks, you have successfully replaced the shut-off valve.

8. Reinstall the Cabinet or Drawers

Replace the cabinet doors or drawers that you removed earlier.
