How to Change a Bathroom Vanity Light Fixture
Replacing a bathroom vanity light fixture is a relatively simple task that can be completed in a short amount of time. With a few simple tools and a little bit of know-how, you can easily update the look of your bathroom without having to hire a professional.
Tools and Materials You'll Need
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Wire cutters
- Electrical tape
- New vanity light fixture
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Turn off the power to the light fixture. This can be done by flipping the breaker or removing the fuse that controls the circuit. If you're not sure which breaker or fuse controls the light fixture, you can turn off the main breaker to your home.
2. Remove the old light fixture. Most vanity light fixtures are held in place by screws. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws and then carefully pull the light fixture away from the wall.
3. Disconnect the wires. The wires that connect the light fixture to the electrical system will be held in place by wire nuts. Use a pair of wire cutters to cut the wires and then remove the wire nuts.
4. Connect the wires to the new light fixture. The wires that come out of the new light fixture will be color-coded. Connect the black wire from the light fixture to the black wire from the electrical system, and the white wire from the light fixture to the white wire from the electrical system.
5. Secure the new light fixture to the wall. Hold the new light fixture in place and then insert the screws. Tighten the screws until the light fixture is secure.
6. Turn on the power to the light fixture. Flip the breaker or insert the fuse that controls the circuit, and then test the light fixture to make sure it's working properly.
Tips
- If you're not comfortable working with electricity, it's best to hire a qualified electrician to change the light fixture for you.
- When choosing a new light fixture, be sure to select one that is the right size for your bathroom.
- If you're not sure how to wire the light fixture, consult the instructions that came with the fixture.
- Never work on a light fixture while the power is on.
