How to Change a Bathroom Light Switch

If your bathroom light switch is not working properly, it may need to be replaced. Replacing a light switch is a relatively simple task that can be completed in a few minutes with the right tools and materials. Here are the steps on how to change a bathroom light switch:

Materials You'll Need:

  • New light switch
  • Screwdriver
  • Electrical tape

Safety First:

Before you begin, make sure to turn off the power to the light switch at the circuit breaker panel. This will prevent you from getting shocked while working on the switch.

Step 1: Remove the Faceplate

Use a screwdriver to remove the screws that hold the faceplate in place. Once the screws are removed, the faceplate can be pulled off.

Step 2: Disconnect the Wires

There will be two or three wires connected to the light switch. Use a screwdriver to loosen the screws that hold the wires in place. Once the screws are loose, the wires can be pulled off the switch.

Note: If there are three wires, one of them will be a ground wire. The ground wire is typically green or bare copper. If you are replacing the switch with a dimmer switch, the ground wire will need to be connected to the green screw on the dimmer switch.

Step 3: Connect the Wires to the New Switch

Connect the wires to the terminals on the new light switch. The terminals will be labeled with letters, such as "L" for line, "N" for neutral, and "G" for ground. If you are replacing the switch with a dimmer switch, the terminals will be labeled differently. Consult the instructions that came with the dimmer switch for more information.

Once the wires are connected, tighten the screws to secure them in place.

Step 4: Install the New Switch

Place the new switch into the electrical box and secure it with the screws. Once the switch is secure, the faceplate can be installed.

Step 5: Turn on the Power

Return to the circuit breaker panel and turn on the power to the light switch. The light switch should now be working properly.

Tips:

  • If you are not comfortable working with electricity, it is best to hire a qualified electrician to change the light switch.
  • Be sure to use the correct size screwdriver for the screws that hold the faceplate and switch in place.
  • If you are replacing a dimmer switch, follow the instructions that came with the new switch.
  • If you have any questions, consult with a qualified electrician.
