How to Change Drain Pipe In Bathroom Sink
Replacing a drain pipe in a bathroom sink is not difficult but requires some plumbing knowledge. The drain pipe is the pipe that connects the sink to the drainpipe in the wall. It is usually made of plastic or metal and can become clogged with hair, soap scum, or other debris over time. If the drain pipe is clogged, it can cause the sink to drain slowly or not at all. In this article, we will show you how to change a drain pipe in a bathroom sink.
Tools and Materials You Will Need
- Adjustable wrench
- Plumber's putty
- New drain pipe
- Bucket
- Rags
Step-by-Step Instructions
- Turn off the water supply to the sink. There should be a shut-off valve under the sink that you can turn off by hand.
- Place a bucket under the sink to catch any water that may leak out.
- Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the nuts that hold the drain pipe in place. There will be two nuts, one on each side of the sink. If your old drain pipe is really old it is very possible that the nuts are frozen and or rusted, if so you will need to cut the drain pipe with a tubing cutter. Be careful not to overtighten the nuts, as you can damage the sink.
- Remove the old drain pipe.
- Apply a bead of plumber's putty to the rim of the new drain pipe.
- Insert the new drain pipe into the sink.
- Tighten the nuts that hold the drain pipe in place.
- Turn on the water supply to the sink and check for leaks.
