How to Change Out a Bathroom Light Fixture

Changing out a bathroom light fixture is a fairly simple task that can be completed in a few steps. However, it is important to note that if you are not comfortable working with electricity, it is best to hire a qualified electrician to do the job.

Here are the steps on how to change out a bathroom light fixture:

  1. Turn off the power to the light fixture. This can be done by flipping the circuit breaker or removing the fuse that controls the power to the bathroom.
  2. Remove the old light fixture. Most light fixtures are held in place by screws. Simply unscrew the screws and remove the old light fixture.
  3. Disconnect the wires from the old light fixture. There will be two or three wires connected to the old light fixture: a white wire (neutral), a black wire (hot), and possibly a green or bare wire (ground). Use a screwdriver to loosen the screws that hold the wires in place, and then disconnect the wires.
  4. Connect the wires to the new light fixture. Connect the white wire from the new light fixture to the white wire from the ceiling, the black wire from the new light fixture to the black wire from the ceiling, and the green or bare wire from the new light fixture to the green or bare wire from the ceiling. Tighten the screws to secure the wires.
  5. Mount the new light fixture. Hold the new light fixture in place and screw it into the ceiling.
  6. Turn on the power to the light fixture. Flip the circuit breaker or insert the fuse that controls the power to the bathroom, and then turn on the light switch to test the new light fixture.

Here are some additional tips for changing out a bathroom light fixture:

  • If you are not sure which circuit breaker or fuse controls the power to the bathroom, you can turn off the main breaker or remove the main fuse to kill the power to the entire house.
  • When disconnecting the wires from the old light fixture, be careful not to touch the bare wires. This could result in an electrical shock.
  • If you are installing a new light fixture that is heavier than the old light fixture, you may need to use different screws to mount it.
  • If you are having any trouble changing out the light fixture, do not hesitate to call a qualified electrician for help.
