How to Change a Water Faucet in the Bathroom

Replacing a bathroom faucet is a relatively simple plumbing task that can be completed in a few hours with the right tools and materials. Here are the essential steps to guide you through the process:

Step 1: Gather Tools and Materials

Before you begin, make sure you have the following tools and materials:

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Basin wrench
  • Plumber's putty
  • New faucet
  • New supply lines (optional)

Step 2: Turn Off the Water Supply

Locate the water supply valves under the sink and turn them off. You may need an adjustable wrench to loosen the valves.

Step 3: Disconnect the Supply Lines

Use the adjustable wrench to disconnect the supply lines from the old faucet. Be careful not to twist or damage the lines.

Step 4: Remove the Old Faucet

Place a basin wrench over the base of the old faucet and turn it counterclockwise to loosen it.

Step 5: Clean the Sink Surface

Use a damp cloth or sponge to clean the area around the faucet holes. Remove any old plumber's putty or sealant.

Step 6: Apply Plumber's Putty

Roll out a small piece of plumber's putty and form it into a ring around the base of the new faucet.

Step 7: Install the New Faucet

Align the new faucet over the holes in the sink and press it down to seal the plumber's putty.

Step 8: Secure the Faucet

Tighten the mounting nuts or bolts under the sink to secure the faucet. Use the adjustable wrench or basin wrench for this step.

Step 9: Connect the Supply Lines

Hand-tighten the supply lines onto the new faucet. Use the adjustable wrench to further tighten them, but avoid overtightening.

Step 10: Turn On the Water Supply

Slowly turn on the water supply valves under the sink and check for leaks. If there are any leaks, tighten the supply lines or faucet as needed.

Tips

* Use a flashlight to see clearly under the sink. * If the old faucet has a drain assembly, remove it before starting these steps. * Consider replacing the supply lines while you have the faucet off, especially if they are old or leaky. * If you encounter any difficulties, don't hesitate to contact a plumber for assistance.
