How to Connect a Bathroom Sink Drain to the Wall

Connecting a bathroom sink drain to the wall is a relatively simple plumbing task that can be completed in a few steps. By following these instructions, you can ensure a proper connection that will prevent leaks and ensure the proper functioning of your sink.

Tools and Materials You'll Need:

Adjustable wrench
Pliers
Putty knife
Plumber's putty
Drain flange gasket
PVC drain pipe
PVC cement
Primer

Step 1: Prepare the Drain Pipe

Cut the PVC drain pipe to the desired length, ensuring it will reach from the sink drain to the wall connection. Apply a thin layer of primer to the inside of the pipe and the outside of the sink drain flange.

Step 2: Install the Drain Flange

Place a bead of plumber's putty around the base of the drain flange. Position the flange over the sink drain hole and press it firmly into place. Tighten the flange nut by hand until it is snug.

Step 3: Install the Drain Gasket

Apply a thin layer of plumber's putty to the drain gasket. Place the gasket over the drain flange, aligning the holes.

Step 4: Connect the Drain Pipe

Apply a thin layer of PVC cement to both the end of the drain pipe and the inside of the drain flange. Insert the drain pipe into the flange and twist it slightly to create a seal. Hold the connection for a few minutes to allow the cement to cure.

Step 5: Support the Drain Pipe (Optional)

If the drain pipe is long or heavy, it may need to be supported to prevent sagging. Install pipe clamps or hangers along the length of the pipe to provide additional support.

Step 6: Connect to Wall Drain

Locate the wall drain connection and remove the cap or plug. Apply a thin layer of plumber's putty to the wall drain gasket. Insert the drain pipe into the wall drain and tighten the connection by hand until it is snug.

Step 7: Test the Connection

Turn on the water to the sink and check for leaks at all connections. If there are any leaks, tighten the connections further or add additional plumber's putty as needed.
