How to Fix a Bathroom Tap That Won't Turn Off
Nothing is worse than a bathroom tap that won't turn off, but don't worry, it's usually an easy fix. Water can leak for a number of reasons, many of which can be resolved quickly.
Here are the steps to resolve the issue:
1. Check the washerThe washer is a rubber seal that sits inside the tap and prevents water from leaking. Over time, the washer can become worn or damaged, causing the tap to leak. To replace the washer, you will need to turn off the water supply to the tap and then remove the aerator. The aerator is the small, round piece at the end of the tap. Once the aerator is removed, you will be able to access the washer. Simply remove the old washer and replace it with a new one. Replace the aerator and turn the water back on.
2. Tighten the packing nutThe packing nut is a nut that is located at the base of the tap handle. Over time, the packing nut can become loose, causing the tap to leak. To tighten the packing nut, you will need a wrench. Simply turn the packing nut clockwise until the leak stops. Be careful not to overtighten the packing nut, as this can damage the tap.
3. Replace the cartridgeThe cartridge is a part of the tap that controls the flow of water. If the cartridge is damaged, it can cause the tap to leak. To replace the cartridge, you will need to turn off the water supply to the tap and then remove the handle. Once the handle is removed, you will be able to access the cartridge. Simply remove the old cartridge and replace it with a new one. Replace the handle and turn the water back on.
4. Call a plumberIf you have tried the above steps and the tap is still leaking, you may need to call a plumber. A plumber will be able to diagnose the problem and repair the tap quickly and efficiently.
Here are some additional tips:
· Use a lubricant on the tap handle to help prevent it from sticking.
· Regularly check the tap for leaks and tighten any loose screws.
· If you have a leaky tap, don't wait to fix it. A small leak can quickly turn into a big problem.
