How To Fix A Leaky Bathroom Sink Faucet
A leaky bathroom sink faucet is a common plumbing problem that can be fixed with some basic tools and materials. Here are the steps on how to fix a leaky bathroom sink faucet.
Identify the Type of Faucet
First, you need to identify the type of faucet you have. There are two main types of bathroom sink faucets: compression faucets and cartridge faucets. Compression faucets have a packing nut that needs to be tightened to stop the leak, while cartridge faucets have a cartridge that needs to be replaced.
Gather the Necessary Tools and Materials
Once you know the type of faucet you have, you can gather the necessary tools and materials. For a compression faucet, you will need a wrench and a screwdriver. For a cartridge faucet, you will need a wrench, a screwdriver, and a replacement cartridge.
Turn Off the Water Supply
Before you start working on the faucet, you need to turn off the water supply to the sink. This is usually done by turning the valve under the sink. If there is no valve under the sink, you will need to turn off the main water supply to your home.
Disassemble the Faucet
Once the water supply is turned off, you can disassemble the faucet. For a compression faucet, you will need to remove the packing nut and the washer. For a cartridge faucet, you will need to remove the handle, the escutcheon plate, and the cartridge.
Replace the Packing Nut or Cartridge
If you have a compression faucet, you will need to replace the packing nut. To do this, simply remove the old packing nut and wrap the new packing nut with Teflon tape. Then, screw the new packing nut into place.
If you have a cartridge faucet, you will need to replace the cartridge. To do this, simply remove the old cartridge and insert the new cartridge.
Reassemble the Faucet
Once you have replaced the packing nut or cartridge, you can reassemble the faucet. For a compression faucet, simply screw the packing nut back into place and tighten it with a wrench. For a cartridge faucet, simply insert the handle, the escutcheon plate, and the cartridge.
Turn On the Water Supply
Once the faucet is reassembled, you can turn on the water supply to the sink. Check for leaks by turning on the faucet and looking for any water dripping from the faucet or the drain.
If you have followed these steps and the faucet is still leaking, you may need to call a plumber for help.
