How to Fix a Leaky Bathroom Tub Faucet with Single Handle
A leaky bathroom tub faucet is a common plumbing issue that can waste water and money. Fortunately, it's usually a relatively easy fix that you can do yourself with a few basic tools. In this article, we'll provide step-by-step instructions on how to fix a leaky single-handle bathroom tub faucet.
Tools and Materials You'll Need:
- Adjustable wrench
- Allen wrench or hex key
- Screwdriver
- Replacement cartridge (if necessary)
- Plumber's putty
- Teflon tape
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Turn off the water supply: Locate the shut-off valves under the sink or behind the toilet and turn them off.
- Remove the handle: Use the Allen wrench or hex key to remove the screw holding the handle in place. Pull the handle straight off the faucet.
- Remove the cap: Underneath the handle, you'll see a cap or escutcheon. Use the screwdriver to remove the screw(s) holding it in place and lift it off.
- Unscrew the cartridge: Using the adjustable wrench, loosen the nut holding the cartridge in place. Pull the cartridge straight out of the faucet body.
- Inspect the cartridge: Examine the cartridge for any visible damage or wear. If it's damaged, replace it with a new one.
- Apply plumber's putty: Apply a thin layer of plumber's putty around the base of the new cartridge (or the old one if it's not damaged).
- Insert the cartridge: Push the cartridge into the faucet body and tighten the nut using the adjustable wrench.
- Wrap Teflon tape: Wrap a few layers of Teflon tape around the threads of the cap.
- Replace the cap: Screw the cap back onto the faucet body.
- Replace the handle: Align the handle with the faucet and insert it onto the stem. Tighten the screw using the Allen wrench or hex key.
- Turn on the water supply: Open the shut-off valves to restore water flow.
- Check for leaks: Turn on the faucet and check for any leaks around the handle, cap, or base of the faucet.
Tips:
- If the leak persists after replacing the cartridge or performing any other repair, it may be necessary to contact a licensed plumber.
- Regular maintenance can help prevent leaks from developing. Clean the faucet aerator and remove any calcium or mineral buildup.
- If the faucet is old or heavily worn, it may be more cost-effective to replace it with a new one.
