How to Fix a Clogged Bathroom Sink: A Step-by-Step Guide

A clogged bathroom sink can be a frustrating and inconvenient problem. However, it's usually an easy fix that you can do yourself with a few simple tools and household items.

Before you begin, it's important to identify the type of clog you have. There are two main types of clogs: drain clogs and p-trap clogs.

Drain clogs occur in the drainpipe, which is the pipe that carries water from the sink to the main drain line. These clogs are usually caused by hair, soap scum, and other debris that accumulates over time.

P-trap clogs occur in the p-trap, which is the curved section of pipe under the sink that prevents sewer gases from escaping into the bathroom. These clogs are usually caused by grease, food particles, and other solids that have hardened and stuck to the sides of the pipe.

Once you've identified the type of clog you have, you can follow these steps to fix it:

Drain Clogs

  1. Remove the drain plug. If the drain plug is stuck, you can use a pair of pliers to gently pry it loose.
  2. Pour a cup of baking soda down the drain followed by a cup of white vinegar. Let the mixture sit for 15 minutes.
  3. Flush the drain with hot water. If the clog is still not clear, repeat steps 2 and 3.
  4. If the clog is still not clear, you can try using a drain snake. A drain snake is a long, flexible tool that can be inserted into the drain to break up clogs.

P-trap Clogs

  1. Place a bucket under the p-trap to catch any water that spills out.
  2. Loosen the nuts that hold the p-trap in place. Be careful not to overtighten the nuts, as this can damage the p-trap.
  3. Remove the p-trap and clean out any debris that has accumulated inside.
  4. Reinstall the p-trap and tighten the nuts securely.

If you're unable to clear the clog yourself, you may need to call a plumber. However, by following these steps, you can fix most bathroom sink clogs without having to call a professional.
