How to Install a Bathroom Faucet Handle
A working bathroom faucet is an essential aspect of any comfortable home. When the handle stops working properly, it can be a frustrating and inconvenient problem. However, replacing a faucet handle is a relatively simple task that can be completed in a short amount of time.
Materials Needed
- New faucet handle
- Adjustable wrench or Allen wrench
- Plumber's putty (optional)
- Screwdriver (if necessary)
Step 1: Turn Off the Water Supply
Locate the water supply valves beneath the sink and turn them off clockwise. This will prevent water from flowing while you work.
Step 2: Remove the Old Handle
Locate the set screw or cap at the base of the handle and remove it using the appropriate tool. Once the screw or cap is removed, gently pull the handle straight up to detach it from the stem.
Step 3: Clean the Stem
Use a damp cloth to clean any debris or corrosion from the faucet stem. This will ensure a proper seal when installing the new handle.
Step 4: Apply Plumber's Putty (Optional)
If the new handle comes with a rubber washer, you can skip this step. Otherwise, apply a small amount of plumber's putty around the base of the handle to create a watertight seal.
Step 5: Install the New Handle
Slide the new handle onto the stem and press it down firmly. If the handle has a set screw, tighten it with the appropriate tool.
Step 6: Turn On the Water Supply
Turn on the water supply valves and check for any leaks. If there is a leak, tighten the handle or apply more plumber's putty as needed.
Additional Tips
When choosing a new faucet handle, make sure it matches the type of faucet you have. There are different types of handles for different types of faucets, such as compression, cartridge, and ball valves.
If you encounter any difficulties during the installation process, don't hesitate to consult a professional plumber.
