How to Paint Old Ceramic Bathroom Tile

Ceramic tiles are a common choice for bathroom walls and floors because they are durable, easy to clean, and relatively inexpensive. However, over time, ceramic tile can start to look outdated or worn. If you're not ready to replace your tile, painting it is a great way to give your bathroom a fresh look. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to paint old ceramic bathroom tile:

Materials You'll Need:

  • TSP cleaner
  • Sandpaper (120-grit and 220-grit)
  • Primer for tile
  • Paint for tile
  • Paintbrush
  • Roller
  • Painter's tape
  • Plastic drop cloth

Step 1: Clean the Tile

The first step is to clean the tile thoroughly. Use a TSP cleaner and a sponge to remove any dirt, grime, or soap scum. Rinse the tile with clean water and allow it to dry completely.

Step 2: Sand the Tile

Once the tile is clean, you need to sand it to create a rough surface for the primer to adhere to. Use 120-grit sandpaper to sand the tile in a circular motion. Once you have sanded the entire surface, go over it again with 220-grit sandpaper to smooth out any rough edges.

Step 3: Apply Primer

Primer is essential for helping the paint to adhere to the tile. Apply a thin coat of primer to the tile using a paintbrush or roller. Allow the primer to dry completely before proceeding to the next step.

Step 4: Apply Paint

Now it's time to apply the paint. Use a paintbrush to paint the edges of the tile and a roller to paint the larger surfaces. Apply two to three thin coats of paint, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next.

Step 5: Seal the Paint

Once the paint is dry, you need to seal it to protect it from wear and tear. Apply a thin coat of clear sealant to the tile using a paintbrush or roller. Allow the sealant to dry completely before using the bathroom.

Tips:

  • Use a high-quality paint and primer specifically designed for tile.
  • Allow each coat of paint and primer to dry completely before applying the next.
  • If you are painting a large area, consider renting a paint sprayer to make the job easier.
  • Be sure to protect your bathroom fixtures and floors with plastic drop cloths.
  • Ventilate the bathroom well while painting and sealing.
