How to Install Knobs on Bathroom Cabinets
Updating the knobs on your bathroom cabinets is an easy way to give your bathroom a fresh new look. It's a relatively simple project that can be completed in a few hours, even if you're a beginner. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you through the process:
Tools and Materials You'll Need:
- New knobs
- Screwdriver
- Drill (optional)
- Drill bit (optional)
- Carpenter's square (optional)
- Pencil or marking tool
Step 1: Remove the Old Knobs
Start by removing the old knobs. Most knobs are attached with screws, so you can simply unscrew them using a screwdriver. If the knobs are stuck, you can try gently rocking them back and forth while unscrewing them. Be careful not to damage the cabinet finish.
Step 2: Mark the Placement of the New Knobs
Once the old knobs are removed, it's time to mark the placement of the new knobs. The standard spacing for knobs is 3 inches on center. This means that the center of each knob should be 3 inches from the center of the next knob. To ensure that the knobs are evenly spaced, you can use a carpenter's square or a measuring tape to mark the placement of each knob.
Step 3: Drill Pilot Holes (Optional)
If the new knobs are larger than the old knobs, you may need to drill pilot holes before installing them. This will help to prevent the wood from splitting when you insert the screws. To drill a pilot hole, use a drill bit that is slightly smaller than the diameter of the screws you'll be using. Drill a hole about 1/2 inch deep into the cabinet door, at each of the marked locations.
Step 4: Install the New Knobs
Once the pilot holes are drilled (if necessary), it's time to install the new knobs. Insert the screws into the knobs and hand-tighten them into the cabinet doors. Be careful not to overtighten the screws, as this can damage the cabinet finish.
Step 5: Finish Up
Once all of the knobs are installed, step back and admire your work. Your bathroom cabinets should now have a fresh new look. Enjoy your updated bathroom!
