How to Remove a Bathroom Sink
Removing a bathroom sink may seem like a daunting task, but it's actually a relatively straightforward process. With a few basic tools and some patience, you can safely and easily remove your old sink and replace it with a new one. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you along the way.
Gather Your Tools
Before you start, make sure you have all the necessary tools for the job:
- Adjustable wrench
- Pliers
- Bucket
- Putty knife
- Flashlight
- New sink and faucet (optional)
Turn Off the Water Supply
Start by turning off the water supply to your sink. This is typically done by closing the shut-off valves located under the sink. If you can't find the shut-off valves, you may need to turn off the main water supply to your home.
Once the water supply is turned off, open the faucet to release any remaining water in the pipes.
Disconnect the Water Lines
Next, use an adjustable wrench to disconnect the water lines from the faucet. Be careful not to overtighten the wrench, as this could damage the water lines.
Allow any remaining water to drain into the bucket.
Disconnect the Drain Line
Locate the drain line, which is the pipe that connects the sink to the drain in the wall. Use pliers to loosen the slip nut that holds the drain line in place.
Pull the drain line out of the sink and allow any remaining water to drain into the bucket.
Remove the Sink
Now it's time to remove the sink. Use a putty knife to carefully break the seal between the sink and the countertop. Be careful not to damage the countertop.
Once the seal is broken, lift the sink straight up and out of the countertop. Be careful not to drop the sink, as it could break.
If you're replacing the sink, you can now install the new sink by reversing the steps above. Make sure to use a new putty seal around the edge of the sink to prevent leaks.
