How to Remove a Kohler Bathroom Faucet Cartridge

Replacing a Kohler bathroom faucet cartridge is a relatively simple task that can be completed in a few minutes. By following these step-by-step instructions, you can easily restore your faucet to working order.

Gather Your Tools

Before you begin, make sure you have the following tools on hand:

  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Adjustable wrench
  • New Kohler faucet cartridge

Step 1: Turn Off the Water Supply

Locate the water supply valves under the sink and turn them off completely. This will prevent water from flowing out of the faucet while you are working.

Step 2: Remove the Handle

Using a Phillips head screwdriver, remove the screw that is securing the handle to the faucet. Pull the handle straight up and remove it.

Step 3: Remove the Aerator

If your faucet has an aerator, unscrew it using an adjustable wrench. This will provide access to the cartridge.

Step 4: Remove the Cartridge Retainer Nut

Locate the cartridge retainer nut, which is typically located at the base of the faucet. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the nut and remove it.

Step 5: Remove the Cartridge

Once the cartridge retainer nut is removed, you can pull the cartridge straight up and out of the faucet body.

Step 6: Install the New Cartridge

Align the new cartridge with the faucet body and insert it. Push the cartridge down until it is fully seated.

Step 7: Tighten the Cartridge Retainer Nut

Thread the cartridge retainer nut back onto the faucet body and tighten it using an adjustable wrench.

Step 8: Reinstall the Aerator

If you removed the aerator, screw it back onto the faucet.

Step 9: Reinstall the Handle

Align the handle with the faucet body and insert it. Secure the handle with the Phillips head screw.

Step 10: Turn On the Water Supply

Turn the water supply valves back on and check for any leaks. If there are no leaks, your faucet repair is complete.

Tips

  • Be sure to purchase the correct cartridge for your Kohler faucet model.
  • If you encounter any difficulty removing the cartridge, do not force it. You may need to use a penetrating oil to loosen it.
  • Once you have removed the cartridge, inspect it for any damage. If the cartridge is damaged, it should be replaced.
