How to Remove a Two Handle Bathroom Faucet

Replacing a bathroom faucet is a relatively simple plumbing task that can be completed in an hour or two. If you're dealing with a leaky or outdated faucet, following these steps will help you remove it safely and efficiently.

Tools and Materials:

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Basin wrench (optional)
  • Old towel or rag
  • Replacement faucet

Step 1: Turn Off Water Supply

Locate the water supply valves under the sink and turn them off. If your sink doesn't have separate valves, you'll need to turn off the main water supply to your home.

Step 2: Remove Aerator (if applicable)

If your faucet has an aerator, remove it by unscrewing it counterclockwise. This will allow you to access the faucet cartridge.

Step 3: Remove Handles

Using a Phillips head screwdriver, remove the screws that hold the faucet handles in place. Once the screws are removed, pull the handles straight up to detach them.

Step 4: Loosen Hex Nuts

Underneath each handle, you'll find a hex nut that connects the faucet cartridge to the water supply lines. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the nuts, but do not remove them completely.

Step 5: Use a Basin Wrench (optional)

If you're having trouble loosening the hex nuts by hand, you can use a basin wrench. Place the wrench over the nuts and tighten it until they break loose.

Step 6: Lift Out Faucet

Once the hex nuts are loose, carefully lift the faucet out of the sink. Be sure to support the weight of the faucet with one hand.

Step 7: Install New Faucet

Place the new faucet in the sink and tighten the hex nuts securely. Attach the handles and tighten the screws. Turn on the water supply and check for any leaks.
