How to Remove Bathroom Floor Tile Grout

Bathroom floor tile grout can become discolored, cracked, or loose over time. Removing old grout is necessary before you can install new grout. The process of removing bathroom floor tile grout is not difficult, but it can be time-consuming. Here are the steps on how to remove bathroom floor tile grout:

Step 1: Gather Your Supplies

You will need the following supplies:

  • Grout removal tool (manual or electric)
  • Bucket
  • Water
  • Sponge or rag
  • Safety glasses
  • Dust mask

Step 2: Prepare the Area

Remove all furniture and rugs from the bathroom. Cover the floor around the tiles with plastic sheeting to protect it from dust and debris. Wear safety glasses and a dust mask to protect yourself from flying particles.

Step 3: Remove the Old Grout

There are two main ways to remove old grout: manually or with an electric grout removal tool. If you are removing a small area of grout, a manual grout removal tool will suffice. For larger areas, an electric grout removal tool will make the job easier.

To remove grout manually: Use a grout removal tool to score the grout lines. Then, use a chisel and hammer to carefully chip away the grout. Be careful not to damage the tiles.

To remove grout with an electric grout removal tool: Follow the manufacturer's instructions for using the tool. Be sure to wear safety glasses and a dust mask when using an electric grout removal tool.

Step 4: Clean the Tile

Once the grout has been removed, use a sponge or rag to clean the tile. Dip the sponge or rag in water and wring it out. Then, wipe down the tiles to remove any remaining dust or debris.

Step 5: Dry the Tile

Allow the tiles to dry completely before installing new grout. You can speed up the drying process by using a fan or hair dryer.
