How to Remove Bathroom Shower Handle
Maintaining a bathroom shower is an important part of keeping your home in good condition. Removing the shower handle is one of the most common tasks that you may need to do, whether it's to replace the handle, fix a leak, or clean the area behind it.
Though it may seem like a daunting task, removing a bathroom shower handle is actually quite simple. With the right tools and a little bit of know-how, you can do it yourself in just a few minutes.
Tools you'll need:
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Allen wrench
- Adjustable wrench
- Rags
Steps:
- Turn off the water supply. This is always the first step when working on any plumbing fixture. Locate the shut-off valves for the shower and turn them clockwise to close them.
- Remove the handle. Most shower handles are attached with a screw or an Allen bolt. If your handle uses a screw, simply remove it with a Phillips head screwdriver. If it uses an Allen bolt, use an Allen wrench to loosen it.
- Pull the handle off. Once the screw or bolt is removed, you should be able to pull the handle off the valve stem. If it's stuck, you can gently pry it off with a flathead screwdriver.
- Remove the trim plate. The trim plate is the decorative piece that covers the base of the handle. It's usually held in place by a few screws. Remove the screws and pull off the trim plate.
- Unscrew the packing nut. The packing nut is a large nut that holds the valve stem in place. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the packing nut. Be careful not to overtighten it, as this could damage the valve.
- Pull out the valve stem. Once the packing nut is loose, you should be able to pull out the valve stem. The valve stem is the part that controls the flow of water.
That's it! You've now successfully removed your bathroom shower handle.
