Turn off the water supply. Locate the water supply valves under the sink and turn them off. This will prevent water from flowing into the sink while you are working.
Place a bucket under the sink. This will catch any water that may leak out when you remove the pop-up assembly.
Remove the drain stopper. This is typically a small, round piece of metal or plastic that sits in the center of the drain. Use a pair of pliers to gently pry it out.
Loosen the locknut. This is a large nut that is located underneath the sink, just below the pop-up assembly. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the locknut by turning it counterclockwise.
