How to Remove a Bathroom Vanity
Removing a bathroom vanity is a relatively straightforward task that can be completed in a few hours with the right tools and materials. Whether you're updating your bathroom or simply need to replace a damaged vanity, follow these steps to safely and efficiently remove the old one:
Step 1: Safety Precautions
Before you begin, ensure your safety by turning off the water supply to the bathroom and draining any remaining water from the faucet and sink. Wear gloves and safety glasses to protect yourself from debris and sharp edges. Clear the area around the vanity to provide ample workspace.
Step 2: Disconnect Water Supply
Locate the water supply lines underneath the sink and use a wrench to disconnect them. Cap the water lines to prevent any leaks. If you encounter any resistance, gently loosen the nuts with a pair of pliers.
Step 3: Remove Drain
Beneath the sink, find the P-trap, a U-shaped pipe that connects the drain to the wall. Loosen the slip nuts that secure the P-trap and carefully remove it. Place a bucket or towel underneath to catch any remaining water.
Step 4: Disconnect Electrical
If your vanity has any electrical components, such as a light fixture or outlet, turn off the power at the breaker panel before disconnecting the wires. Note the location of each wire and take pictures if necessary.
Step 5: Remove Vanity
Now that all connections are detached, remove any doors and drawers from the vanity. Carefully lift the vanity straight up and off the floor. If it's attached to the wall, use a pry bar to gently loosen it and pull it away.
Step 6: Clean and Prepare
Once the vanity is removed, clean the floor and wall where it was located. This will help ensure a proper fit when installing the new vanity. If you're replacing the flooring or wall covering, do so before proceeding with the new vanity installation.
