How to Remove Pop Up Valve In Bathroom Sink

A bathroom sink pop-up valve is a device that allows you to open and close the drain using a lever or knob. Over time, these valves can become clogged or damaged, requiring removal for cleaning or replacement. Removing a pop-up valve is a relatively simple task that can be completed in a few minutes with the right tools.

Tools You'll Need:

Adjustable wrench
Phillips head screwdriver
Flat head screwdriver
Bucket or bowl
Rags

Steps:

1. Turn off the water supply: Locate the water supply valves under the sink and turn them off. Open the faucet to release any remaining water in the lines.

2. Remove the stopper: Grab the stopper and pull it straight up to remove it from the drain assembly. If the stopper is stuck, insert a flat head screwdriver into the slot on the side and gently pry it open.

3. Disconnect the linkage: Locate the linkage that connects the pop-up valve to the lever or knob. Disconnect the linkage by unscrewing it using a Phillips head screwdriver.

4. Remove the retainer nut: Underneath the sink, locate the retainer nut that holds the pop-up valve in place. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen and remove the nut.

5. Pull out the pop-up valve: Once the retainer nut is removed, you should be able to pull the pop-up valve straight up out of the drain assembly. Inspect the valve for any clogs or damage.

6. Clean or replace the valve: If the valve is clogged, clean it using a small brush or by soaking it in vinegar. If the valve is damaged, replace it with a new one.

7. Reassemble the sink: Insert the new or cleaned pop-up valve back into the drain assembly. Tighten the retainer nut using the adjustable wrench. Reconnect the linkage to the lever or knob using the Phillips head screwdriver.

8. Turn on the water supply: Turn the water supply valves back on and check for any leaks. Adjust the pop-up valve as necessary to ensure it opens and closes smoothly.
